The Education Funding Agency (EFA) is now running a condition data collection (CDC) programme. Between 2017 and 2019, the government run scheme will collect information on the physical condition of all government maintained schools in England. The EFA will use four sub-contracting organisations to collect the data and a separate organisation to provide quality assurance. The information collected will be in three main categories:

  • Physical condition of school buildings
  • Existence of compliance documentation (asbestos register, fire risk assessment) and key building management
  • Site information including building information, number of classrooms, listed status, and third-party usage

The collated information will be used to help schools benefit from future investment and government funding.

What does the government’s CDC programme mean for the future of school buildings maintenance?

Deyes High School

As school class sizes continue to increase and education leaders try to keep up with advancements in technology; additional funding becomes more vital than ever. Through the CDC, the government hope to go some way to addressing the issue of school improvement. The information collected by the CDC will help schools to apply for the annual CIF (Condition Improvement Fund).

Schools will be able to use the information collected as evidence to back up their bid for CIF investment. The whole process will be streamlined, avoiding delays, and helping local authorities and head teachers make successful bids.

The EFA are developing a progressive and fair system which helps all schools to reach their full potential. The CDC is designed to ensure that the schools with the greatest need will have the best opportunity at receiving funding. By working in a clear and concise way, the information database will hopefully prove to be an asset for educational establishments across the country.
