Public budgets in England and Wales are now tighter than ever. Funding for education is scarce, and schools and colleges are increasingly dependent on the government’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) for necessary repair work and expansion.

Last year CIF funding helped nearly 1,200 schools and colleges across the country. Schools received between £20,000 and £4 million per project with a total CIF investment of £466 million. With such generous investment available, it’s no surprise that the CIF scheme is so popular and competitive. If you’re to have any chance of making a successful application; it’s important to be well prepared.

At JPF Systems, we can help you to prepare your application. We can provide detailed quotes and project plans including time scale which you can submit with your application.

Important considerations for your CIF application

Birkenhead School

Creating a safe and positive school environment is your primary concern. To compile a successful CIF application, you should:

  • Plan your bid well in advance – The CIF application system opens in October. If this is your first time bidding you need to be registered by November. The final deadline for application submission will be early December, so there’s no time like the present to get started.
  • Provide as much relevant evidence as possible – Providing quotes and detailed project plans from a reputable contractor like JPF Systems will boost your chances of success. If the project improves your school’s energy efficiency and safety it has more chance of being accepted than if it upgrades the building’s aesthetic.
  • Focus on improving your learning environment – Creating a better learning environment is a positive feature of any CIF application. Improving health and safety, fire-safety, and issues of overcrowding can be particularly persuasive in an application for extension.
  • Set a realistic time scale and budget – Funding requests will only be considered for projects valued between £20K and £4 million. Projects must usually be completed by March the following year; however, large scale projects may be given exceptional status if completed within two years.
